New Delhi: Now a demand has arisen for a new technology to prevent fake voting in elections. The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition demanding the implementation of fingerprint and eye scan (biometric) identification at polling booths. The court has issued notice to the Central Government, Election Commission and some other states in this matter and sought their response.
The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made it clear that this demand cannot be considered for the assembly elections being held in some states. However, the bench said, 'It needs to be implemented in the coming Lok Sabha or Assembly elections.'
This petition has been filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. The petition states that things like bribery, undue influence and fake voting affect the sanctity and integrity of the electoral process. This causes huge loss to common citizens. Therefore, the Election Commission should be directed to implement fingerprint and eye biometric systems at polling booths.
