Meghan Markle has been called a lot of things, but I have never heard her referred to as chef. This doesn't seem to bother MasterChef Australia, who have decided her widely derided cooking efforts on her Netflix show With Love, Meghan, qualified her to be a guest judge on the show. Meghan and husband Prince Harry are currently Down Under in a private capacity, but also combining visits to charitable causes, alongside money-making events such as this appearance, while there.
While show bosses are undoubtedly delighted with their coup this latest gig proves how far Meghan's star has fallen. While they are acclaimed, even the most celebrated of TV chefs is rarely considered top of the showbiz food chain. They are preparing the snacks for the glitzy awards ceremonies rather than attending them. They cook for the stars rather than dining with them. The duchess has long waxed lyrical about her acting career, which mainly only consisted of legal drama Suits, making her a B-list TV star. Despite this she has very much positioned herself and husband Prince Harry as bona fide Hollywood A-listers since they moved to Montecito and is clearly desperate to be acknowledged as a proper star. This latest move will do nothing to help with that.
Look at any MasterChef series anywhere in the world and the experts appearing are genuine chefs and food experts - they also work for a living outside of that. They cannot sustain themselves simply from TV as it is not their main job. They are not stars in the sense that Meghan recognises the word, and if she received the same pay cheque they do, she would quickly recognise this.
Meghan taking such a role is not a good promotional opportunity for her. It simply shows she can no longer land the proper A-list gigs.
You wouldn't see Oscar winning A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow appearing on MasterChef, despite the fact she often posts cooking videos and her Goop brand includes a food range. Nor would uber a-lister Oprah Winfrey position herself as a guest judge despite having a range of comfort foods called O, That's Good.
She's not even qualified to be there. Meghan may have some foodstuffs in her As Ever range, but the fact her jams are actually compotes and she doesn't seem to know the difference doesn't instil confidence in me regarding her culinary skills.
Indeed watching her efforts in the kitchen on With Love, Meghan I, and many others, have constantly been horrified by the way she flouts basic hygiene rules with her hair uncovered and her hands bulging with jewellery.
I can't think of one single person who would refer to her as a culinary expert or a chef - except perhaps herself. But her "Jack (or Jill) of all trades" attitude and love of a hustle seems to have finally caught up with her.
She has diluted her brand so much she has officially slipped down the rungs of the celebrity ladder as this is a C-list gig at best. MasterChef may be a worldwide brand but the show is the star - not the guests. Her appearance elevates their brand - not hers.
I wouldn't be surprised if she shows up on I'm A Celebrity next year in a desperate bid to keep herself on screens.
