What Is Air New Zealand Skynest: A major change is about to come regarding long-haul flights. Air New Zealand has announced its Economy Skynest, which could completely change the experience of long-haul air travel in the future. According to the airline's press release, it is a bunk bed-style sleeping system specially designed for economy and premium economy class passengers, especially for flights that are 16 to 18 hours long or longer.

When will the booking start?

The airline has stated that bookings for Skynest will begin on May 18, 2026, and the feature will be available on its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights from November 2026. This is the first concept of its kind in the world, developed after years of research and testing.

What will be the facility?

Under Skynest, the aircraft will feature a total of six sleeping pods. These will resemble small bunk beds, allowing passengers to fully recline, which is typically not possible in economy seats. Each pod will be approximately 6.6 feet (about 203 cm) long and approximately 64 cm wide, ensuring comfortable sleep even in limited space. Passengers will be provided with fresh bedding, including a pillow, sheet, and blanket. A small amenity kit will also be provided, containing eye masks, socks, and skincare products. Each pod will also feature privacy curtains, reading lights, ventilation, USB charging ports, seat belts, and earplugs.

How much will the ticket cost?

However, this feature will not be included in the base ticket price. Passengers will be charged an additional fee to use it. According to reports, a four-hour session can be booked for approximately ₹28,000. Each passenger will be allowed to book only one session, and two sessions will be available per flight, meaning a total of 12 passengers will be able to avail of this feature.

The airline has also set some rules for this, such as not allowing food inside the pod and not allowing two people to stay together in a pod. However, there is no restriction on snoring. This feature will initially be introduced on routes that are considered among the world's longest flights, such as the Auckland to New York route, which takes approximately 17–18 hours. According to the airline's CEO, Nikhil Ravishank, this initiative is designed to provide passengers with better comfort on long flights, making travel more comfortable and convenient.
