The second sister searched a lot for her missing sister but could not find her. After this the second sister wept so much in memory of her that Umiam lake was created with her tears. This is the reason why it is known as ‘water of tears’. This story has given the lake a mystical ring. Some locals also call this lake as ‘Barpani’ which means ‘big water’.
