KKR vs GT IPL 2026: Struggling Kolkata Knight Riders Seek Turnaround Against In-Form Gujarat Titans

Three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders head into a crucial clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Friday, with their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign at a crossroads.

Led by Ajinkya Rahane and coached by Abhishek Nayar, KKR have endured a difficult start, managing just one win in five matches while suffering four defeats. More concerning than the results has been the lack of clarity in both planning and execution—an issue they must address quickly to stay in contention.

Injuries have compounded their struggles. The absence of key pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, along with the release of Mustafizur Rahman, has weakened their bowling attack. However, a bigger concern has been the dip in form of their trusted spin duo, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Chakravarthy, in particular, is yet to pick up a wicket this season, disrupting KKR’s traditional middle-over control.

Decision-making has also come under scrutiny. Inconsistent team selections and questionable tactical calls—including leaving out players like Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra—have hurt the team’s momentum. Their campaign began on a poor note when they failed to defend 220 against Mumbai Indians, followed by a heavy defeat at home to Sunrisers Hyderabad, further denting confidence.

Much of the spotlight has been on Cameron Green, brought in as a marquee replacement for Andre Russell. However, his performances so far have been underwhelming, adding to KKR’s concerns. The batting order, too, remains unsettled, with experienced names like Manish Pandey and Rahul Tripathi yet to feature, leaving the team still searching for the right combination.

KKR will need a collective turnaround rather than isolated performances. They can take inspiration from past IPL comebacks, such as Mumbai Indians’ remarkable 2015 turnaround after a slow start.

Historically, Gujarat Titans hold a slight edge in head-to-head encounters, leading 3-1. But KKR will be focused on resetting their campaign rather than past records.

Meanwhile, the 2022 champions Gujarat Titans come into the match with growing confidence. After an early setback at home to Rajasthan Royals, they have bounced back strongly with two impressive away wins. Their bowling unit looks settled, with Prasidh Krishna delivering in key phases and Rashid Khan rediscovering rhythm.

With Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler in form, Gujarat appear well-balanced heading into the contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The pitch is expected to favour batters, setting the stage for another high-scoring encounter.
