New Delhi, 17 April 2026: OpenAI is taking a big step forward in the race of artificial intelligence. According to reports, the company plans to spend more than $20 billion (approximately Rs 1.6 lakh crore) on chips and servers from Cerebras Systems in the next three years.
The deal is not limited to just buying computing capacity, OpenAI can also acquire an equity stake in Cerebras. According to the report, the company will receive warrants, which could increase its stake to approximately 10% in the future. In early January, OpenAI signed a contract to buy 750 MW of computing capacity from Cerebras, valued at more than $10 billion. This new deal is said to be almost twice the size.
The main purpose of this investment is to meet the growing computing needs of AI systems, especially for “inference” – the process by which AI models generate answers to user questions. Under the deal, OpenAI can also invest approximately $1 billion, which will be used to develop Cerebras’ data centers.
Cerebras Systems, founded in 2015, is known for its advanced wafer-scale engine chips and challenges larger companies like Nvidia. The partnership is also considered important for Cerebras’ IPO plans. The company is preparing to list on the stock exchange in the second quarter of this year and plans to raise $3 billion at a valuation of about $35 billion. Overall, this deal shows that the demand for computing power in the AI field is growing rapidly, and big companies are investing heavily to stay ahead in the race.
