Local authorities promptly issued warnings for surrounding areas, including Stewartville, Simpson, and Austin, advising residents to take immediate safety measures. Storm chasers noted that the tornado was spotted close to Rochester International Airport during the sightings.
The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for parts of southeastern Minnesota, effective immediately. This warning encompasses southwestern Olmsted County, north-central Mower County, and southeastern Dodge County. According to the alert, at 1:52 PM CDT, weather observers confirmed a tornado located 7 miles east of Hayfield, approximately 12 miles southeast of Dodge Center, moving eastward at 30 mph.
Officials have cautioned about the significant risks involved, stating, “Flying debris poses a threat to anyone without shelter. Mobile homes may suffer damage or destruction. Expect damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles, along with potential tree damage.” The tornado is projected to approach Rochester and Stewartville around 2:05 PM CDT, with several other locations in its anticipated path, including Chester, Highway 30 and County 15, Oslo, Pleasant Grove, Predmore, and County Roads 3 and 108.
Key areas such as Apache Mall and sections of Interstate 90 between mile markers 205 and 220 are also likely to be affected. Residents in the impacted regions are strongly advised to seek shelter immediately as the situation evolves.
