Separatist leader Shabbir Shah has been sent on two weeks' remand by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court Jammu. NIA presented him in the Jammu court this morning. Shabbir Shah was arrested by NIA from judicial custody on Friday. His arrest was made in an old case of July 17, 1996, in which the crowd had turned violent after sloganeering during the funeral of a terrorist. During this time some terrorists had opened fire, in which the security forces were injured.
Earlier on Friday, he was produced in Patiala House Court, from where NIA was given three days transit remand. Now NIA will send them for further investigation. Jammu Has brought and obtained two weeks' remand from the court. On the other hand, the family members confirmed the arrest but said that they have not been able to talk to him since the incident.
This development has happened a few weeks after Shah got relief in other cases. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court of India in a separate NIA case on March 12, 2026, followed by bail in the money laundering case on March 28, 2026.
A Delhi court granted bail to Shabbir Shah in a money laundering case related to terror funding. On March 12, the Supreme Court granted bail to Shah in the terror funding case, in which he was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 4, 2019.
On September 4 last year, the Supreme Court had refused to grant interim bail to Shah in this case and issued a notice to the NIA seeking its response on his plea challenging the June 12, 2025 order of the Delhi High Court, in which he was refused relief.
The High Court refused to grant bail to Shah, noting that the possibility of him committing similar illegal acts and influencing witnesses could not be ruled out.
In 2017, the NIA had booked 12 people on charges of conspiracy to raise funds to disturb peace by throwing stones, damaging public property and conspiring to wage war against the central government. Shah is accused of playing a big role in promoting the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir.
They instigated common people to raise slogans in support of separation of JK, paid tribute to the families of slain terrorists by calling them martyrs, took money through hawala transactions, and deposited money through trade across the LoC, which were allegedly used to promote subversive and terrorist activities.
