SOL: The School of Open Learning (SOL) at the University of Delhi is set to go global. Starting from the academic session 2026-27, students will have the opportunity to pursue eight foreign language courses—currently offered by the institution—in an online mode as well. This initiative will enable students from both within India and abroad to pursue these one-year diploma courses from the comfort of their own homes. The Academic Council of the University of Delhi has granted its approval for the operation of these courses in the online mode.
Prof. Payal Mago, Director of the School of Open Learning (SOL) at the University of Delhi, stated that the decision to launch foreign language courses online was taken in response to a long-standing demand from students. Until now, all these courses were conducted exclusively in the offline mode. Consequently, many students—both domestic and international—were unable to avail themselves of these opportunities. It was only last year that SOL initially introduced these courses in the offline mode. The annual fee for these courses ranges from ₹11,000 to ₹14,000.
Prof. Mago explained that this facility would prove to be immensely beneficial for students who are unable to travel to Delhi to pursue their studies. It was with this specific consideration in mind that this initiative was launched. Through the online mode, students not only from Delhi but also from other parts of India and abroad will be able to easily enroll in these courses. Among these foreign languages, programs in French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Italian will be conducted under the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies.
**A Digital Opportunity to Learn Foreign Languages at SOL**
The Department of East Asian Studies covers Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. These courses have been designed in a manner that allows students to learn the language from the comfort of their homes. Classes will be conducted via a digital platform, offering students both flexible timings and convenience. A dedicated platform will be developed for this purpose, enabling students to access video lectures and submit assignments. Additionally, there will be face-to-face interaction sessions, the schedule for which will be published on the portal.
She further remarked that in today's globalized era, proficiency in foreign languages opens up new avenues for employment. The demand for these languages is witnessing a continuous rise across various sectors, including multinational corporations, tourism, translation services, and international relations. In this context, this step taken by SOL could prove helpful in steering students' futures in a better direction.
