Legal Issues Arise for 'Lawrence of Punjab'

The Hindi docuseries titled Lawrence of Punjab is facing legal challenges before its premiere. The Punjab police have formally requested a ban on the series by reaching out to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB). In a letter addressed to V. Neeraja, the Special Director General of Police (Cyber Crime), concerns were raised regarding the content of the docuseries, which focuses on Lawrence Bishnoi, a criminal currently incarcerated. The police argue that the series tends to glorify organized crime.

In addition, Ramesh Bishnoi, a relative of Lawrence, has also called for the series to be banned, asserting that the family did not give consent for its production.

Ramesh Bishnoi Demands Ban on the Series

During an interview, Ramesh expressed the family's strong disapproval of the docuseries, which is said to be inspired by Lawrence. He questioned director Raghav Darr about the authorization to use Lawrence's name in the project, stating, “Neither did the family permit nor the government. What do you want to prove by making such docuseries?” He emphasized that the family had previously denied permission when approached about the project, adding, “After the court announces its verdict, we shall talk.” Ramesh further noted that the ongoing court case complicates the portrayal of Lawrence as a gangster, which the family finds objectionable.

Ramesh also mentioned that both the Punjab police and local leaders are advocating for a ban on the docuseries. He stated, “I learned through the media that the High Court might get involved in this. I want the High Court and Supreme Court to ban it immediately.” He concluded by expressing concern that such projects cast Punjab in a negative light.
