India has encountered difficulties, losing the first three matches of the five-game T20I series against South Africa. This series is crucial as it serves as preparation for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in England and Wales in June. Several factors have contributed to India's recent decline in performance.
Ahead of the fourth T20I, head coach Amol Muzumdar highlighted the team's struggle to secure early wickets as a significant issue throughout the series. He stated, "From our perspective, the primary concern is the wickets lost during the powerplay. We've had thorough discussions about this, and it's a key issue we've identified. However, I believe our bowlers are capable of improving in the upcoming matches."
Muzumdar reassured fans that while this issue has been noted, it is not a long-term problem, especially considering the team's recent successes in T20 cricket. He emphasized, "Historically, we've been effective in taking wickets at regular intervals, which has been a crucial aspect of our success in the past two years. We recognize that we need to improve in this area, and we are addressing it."
With cricket set to be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Muzumdar clarified that the team's primary focus remains on the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. He remarked, "While the Olympics are on the horizon, our immediate attention is directed towards the T20 World Cup in June 2026. This event will be significant for us, and we are channeling all our energy into it."
Muzumdar also spoke about the performance of senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma, expressing concern but maintaining confidence in her ability to bounce back. Deepti has struggled in the current T20I series, scoring only two runs and failing to take any wickets in the first three matches. He stated, "I want to be straightforward; Deepti's form is a concern. However, as with all great players, form is temporary, but class is permanent. She has proven herself in high-pressure situations, especially during the last Women's World Cup."
Muzumdar added, "It’s only a matter of time before she regains her form, and I, along with the entire nation, hope it begins in the next match. Deepti has been a key player for us and has consistently taken on significant responsibilities in the middle order."
The fourth T20I is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on Saturday, April 25.
