A big news is coming out regarding electricity bills in Delhi, which can be heavy on the pockets of the general public. Congress leader Devendra Yadav has claimed that due to the laxity of the government, a huge increase in electricity rates in Delhi is almost certain. According to Yadav, the Electricity Appellate Tribunal has rejected the plea of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) which had sought additional time to recover old dues of Rs 38,500 crore. Now after this decision, companies will have to make recovery in less time, which will have a direct impact on the monthly bills of consumers.
Explaining the seriousness of the matter, Devendra Yadav said that according to the Supreme Court’s order of August 2025, power companies will have to recover their dues within the next four years. Whereas the Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) was wanting a moratorium of seven years for this. Congress alleges that the Delhi government did not show activeness in this matter, due to which it could not get relief from the court. Now the result of this will be that the burden of crores of rupees will be put on the heads of Delhiites in a short time.
The Congress leader warned that if the government agreed to the power companies, the electricity bills in Delhi could rise by up to 70 percent. This increase may be applicable to both residential and commercial connections from April 2026. He also clarified that even though the power companies may claim that the rates have not increased for years, the reality is that in the last 2-3 years the bills have been increased by 30 to 40 percent in the name of surcharge and PPAC.
Questioning the intentions of the power companies (discoms), Yadav said that companies like BSES and Tata Power are continuously earning profits, yet no relief was given to the consumers. He said that regulatory assets worth about Rs 38,552 crore are outstanding on these companies. The question raised is that when the companies were profitable, why did the public not get the benefit? And now why is the public being made a pawn to compensate for the losses?
Congress has termed the government’s silence as a betrayal of the public. Devendra Yadav has demanded that the government should immediately stop the proposed increase in electricity rates and prepare a new subsidy plan to provide relief to the consumers. He said that the people of Delhi are already facing the brunt of inflation, hence the huge increase in electricity bills will be no less than a big problem for them. Now it remains to be seen what action the government takes on this issue.
