According to the legend, a pious Vaishya named Dhanapal lived in a city named Bhadravati. He had many sons, but the youngest son Dhrishtabuddhi was extremely mischievous and indulged in sinful activities. Fed up with his bad conduct, his father threw him out of the house.

After being thrown out of the house, he wandered here and there and one day reached the ashram of sage Kaundinya. There he asked for a way to get rid of his sins. The sage advised him to observe a fast on Mohini Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month.

Dhrishtabuddhi observed this fast with full devotion and devotion. With the effect of this fast, all his sins were destroyed and ultimately he attained a place in the world of Lord Vishnu.

The importance of this Ekadashi is also considered special because on this day Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini during the churning of the ocean and provided nectar to the gods and protected them from demons.
