A Strong Start for 'Michael' in India

The Hollywood film 'Michael' has made a remarkable entrance at the Indian box office, raking in around Rs. 6 crore (approximately USD 650K) on its opening day. This total includes about Rs. 1.60 crore from preview screenings conducted on Thursday. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as no Hollywood musical biopic has previously made a significant impact in India. For comparison, 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' a worldwide sensation in 2018, only managed to earn Rs. 7 crore in India, a figure that 'Michael' has nearly equaled on its very first day.

The film's success is especially evident in South India, where nearly 66% of its opening day earnings came from the three primary South Indian circuits. Tamil Nadu stood out as the leading market, followed by Kerala, the Telugu states, and Karnataka. Conversely, the Hindi-speaking regions showed a weaker performance, with the Mumbai-Pune area being a notable exception. This trend can be linked to the limited appeal of English music in the Hindi belt, where local music is more prevalent. Michael Jackson's legacy in India is largely associated with his dance performances, which resonate more with audiences in Mumbai and South India, while the film has faced challenges in gaining popularity in northern regions.

Advance ticket sales significantly contributed to the film's opening, with over half of the first-day revenue stemming from pre-booked tickets. The advance bookings for Saturday look promising, indicating a potential rise in earnings, although a slight dip is expected on Sunday as urban audiences typically reduce their cinema visits on that day. The overall box office for the weekend is projected to reach around Rs. 17 crore (USD 1.75 million). The film's performance on Monday will be pivotal in shaping its future trajectory.

On a global scale, 'Michael' has also debuted strongly, reportedly grossing around USD 40 million in North America on its first day, with expectations to reach USD 90 million by the end of the opening weekend. The overseas earnings up to Thursday were approximately USD 32 million, and the weekend total is anticipated to exceed USD 100 million, potentially nearing USD 125 million. Overall, the worldwide weekend gross is expected to surpass USD 200 million, with long-term projections aiming for a total of USD 1 billion.

The film's impressive performance in both domestic and international markets underscores its wide appeal and the potential for ongoing success in the weeks ahead. As audiences continue to respond favorably, 'Michael' may very well reshape the landscape for Hollywood musical biopics in India.
