Basavakalyan (Bidar): A case of alleged illegal cattle transportation was reported in Karnataka’s Bidar district, where BJP MLA Sharanu Salagar intervened and rescued more than 23 animals on Saturday.

According to reports, the incident occurred near Chitta Cross in Manthala village of Basavakalyan taluk. Acting on specific information, Salagar intercepted three goods vehicles that were reportedly transporting cattle illegally towards a slaughterhouse.

Upon inspection, the animals — including cows, calves, bulls and buffalo calves — were found packed in cramped conditions without adherence to basic transport norms. Officials said overcrowding in one of the vehicles led to suffocation, resulting in the death of a bull on the spot.

The MLA expressed strong concern over the condition of the animals and questioned the drivers over alleged cruelty during transportation.

Following the incident, personnel from the local Manthala police station, led by PSI Suvarna, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A formal complaint has been lodged against those involved in the alleged illegal activity.

Police have seized the vehicles and initiated further investigation. The rescued animals have been shifted to a nearby shelter for care.

Authorities noted that border areas of Bidar district have witnessed repeated instances of such transportation, and residents have called for stricter enforcement to curb the practice.
