'I won Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and this is the biggest mistake contestants make'

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire made history this weekend as the first person to take home the million pound jackpot in six years did so this Sunday night (26th April) on ITV.

Presenter Jeremy Clarkson put Stockport resident and retired IT Analyst Roman Dubowski to the test this weekend to kick off a brand new series of the iconic quiz show.

Following a nail-biting round of fiendish trivia, Roman reached the coveted million-pound question where he was asked to identify a trademarked logo first used in 1876 that is described in James Joyce's Ulysses and depicted in paintings by Manet and Picasso.

Roman answered correctly without the help of his remaining lifelines, becoming the seventh person to win the UK version of the show's top prize.

Speaking exclusively to Reach and other press, Roman identified a frequent mistake made by other Who Wants to Be a Millionaire applicants.

"If people don't like quizzes, they shouldn't come on this show," he warned. "But a lot of people do.

"There's no harm in trying, even if you don't get to the top there's a good chance you'll win something, so that's a good reason to go."

A devout quizzer, Roman had already applied to the show twice before finally securing a spot on the new series. In fact, he was even given a date to appear after his second try in 2022, but was eventually told he hadn't been selected just before filming.

He has also been asked several times about appearing on other shows such as The Chase, but says he has been "saving himself" for Millionaire.

Touching on how he prepared, he advised: "It's always worth revising your weak subjects, but that's not so easy because you have no idea what questions could come up."

And Roman also highlighted another common mistake made by contestants - who to pick as their Phone a Friend. Luckily, his sister was on-hand to answer a question on clothing brands.

"With regard to choosing your friend, I think it's got to be friends who know things you don't know, so you can ask them something which you know they might know," he explained.

"A lot of people do choose family members because you've known them all your life. You know their strong points and their weak points, and I knew exactly what my sister should know and what she wouldn't know. And she probably does more shopping than me. So that was a good question to ask her, when the Uniqlo question came up."

Roman admitted it took a while for the win to sink in, but in the weeks since recording he has had to "stop himself" from telling his friends and family the thrilling news. He initially thought the money could buy himself a new kitchen, but is now looking to move after living in the same house for 30 years.

"I think people know I'm looking for a new house," he revealed, "and then they'll say 'what price bracket?' and that's gone up and [they ask] 'Ooh! Can you really afford that?' And I can't tell them the reason why that is.

"So, it's been difficult to keep it in. I probably came across as calm on the show but I'm actually quite a talkative person on subjects, so it's something I've wanted to say, but I know deep down I can't say, because I've signed all of this. If I do say the show might take it all away from me!"

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? airs Sundays at 7pm on ITV and ITVX.
