How Many Marks Are Required to Pass?
In the CBSE Class 12 examination, students are considered to have passed only if they secure 33 percent marks. However, if a student falls short by a single mark, they may be awarded grace marks. Nevertheless, students whose scores remain below the passing threshold—even after the application of grace marks—may be required to appear for a compartment examination or may even have to repeat the same class.
What is the Grading System?
CBSE employs a 9-point grading scale (ranging from A1 to E) based on the marks secured by each student. A1 represents the highest grade, while E is assigned to students who fail. Among all students who pass the examination, the top one-eighth percentile is awarded an A1 grade, followed by the next one-eighth percentile, which receives an A2 grade. Subsequent one-eighth percentiles of passing students are awarded B1 and B2 grades, followed by C1, C2, D1, and D2 grades in the same sequential order. Students who fail to pass the examination are assigned an E grade.
