A man who scooped £1m on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? has revealed the one book everybody should read if they hope to follow in his footsteps. Roman Dubowski recently joined an elite group of just seven people to claim the game show's top prize, leaving viewers astounded as he staked £468,000 on the final question.
The retired IT analyst secured the life-changing sum by correctly identifying Bass Ale as the logo depicted in a painting by French modernist Manet, a feat he credited to his love of visiting art galleries. Roman, who intends to spend his windfall on a new home with a driveway so he no longer has to park on the street, has now shared some quizzing tips for anyone considering taking on the challenge. Alongside visiting art galleries, Roman advised prospective contestants to choose their "Phone a Friend" selections carefully, listen to host Jeremy Clarkson, persevere when applying for the show, and keep their nerves in check.
He also pointed to a particular book. He told The i Paper: "I have on my bookshelf the A to Z of Everything: A Compendium of General Knowledge by Trevor Montague. It's very good."
"I also revised Jeremy Clarkson's Wikipedia entry to see what topics I should and shouldn't ask him. In the end, I did it without using Jeremy as a lifeline."
A Mensa member and former Brain of London, Trevor Montague is the founder of The British Quiz Association. His other works include The A to Z of Britain and Ireland and The A to Z of Sport.
Roman, who resides in Stockport and enjoys quizzing as a hobby, described the victory as "unreal" and revealed he needed a cup of tea to "let it sink in", adding that he felt at the time he knew the correct answer "straight away".
He told the BBC: "It felt unreal... it didn't feel like the real world, almost, this isn't where I expected to be. It didn't sink in until later."
Roman went on to describe what he did afterwards: "I did sort of go home quietly, to be honest, I didn't get drunk - I had to have a cup of tea. I think it was just sitting in a quiet room and letting it all sink in, and thinking about what happened in the previous 24 hours."
This follows news that residents of a Lincolnshire town celebrated a £12.3m People's Postcode Lottery windfall. Over the weekend, locals gathered at Sutton-on-Sea's King George Playing Fields to open envelopes revealing exactly how much they would receive.
One particularly lucky resident from the LN12 2 postcode was Tracey Hill, who scooped a staggering £389,846 - a "life-changing" sum that means she's "not got to worry" about money anymore.
Tracey revealed to the BBC that she intends to splash out on a holiday and a car, and to help her daughter with the cost of passing her driving test. Everyone in the postcode was set to receive a minimum of £2,000.
