A major supermarket chain with roughly 2,400 stores across the UK is to close a city branch in weeks. Co-op will shut its long-serving convenience store on Thurston Road in Hillington, Glasgow, in mid-June after two decades trading on the southside.

The closure comes because the retailer's lease on the unit expires this year and the landlord has demanded the premises back, leaving the business unable to continue operating at the site.

Bosses informed staff of the decision and are now prioritising support for colleagues, although it is not yet clear if any jobs will be lost or if workers will be redeployed to other local branches. This news has sparked concern among the dedicated workforce and the regular customers who have frequented the shop for many years.

While the retail giant manages a massive national network, including over 300 locations across Scotland, it confirmed that this specific site will be removed from its portfolio.

The company clarified that despite the closure, it maintains a strong presence in the region, with approximately 30 of its stores continuing to serve the wider Glasgow postal area.

A Co-op spokesperson said: "Co-op is committed to serving and supporting local communities with around 30 stores operating across the Glasgow postal area.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to remain at this location. Our priority now is to fully support colleagues, who have been informed, and we would like to thank the community for its support of this store."

The Hillington branch opened about 20 years ago and has become a staple for residents in the area, reported the Scottish Sun.

The news comes amid a wave of high street pressures, with several other retailers also announcing Scottish closures due to expiring leases or shifting commercial priorities.

Co-op continues to operate dozens of stores across Greater Glasgow but confirmed it cannot secure a future at the Thurston Road site.

Local shoppers expressed disappointment at the loss of the convenient neighbourhood store, though the chain stressed its ongoing commitment to the wider city. The branch is set to pull down its shutters for the final time in the middle of June.
