WhatsApp Support End: WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app, but soon it will stop working on many old Android smartphones. Meta has made it clear that from September 8, 2026, WhatsApp support will not be available in phones running versions older than Android 6.0. That means, if your phone is running on Android 5.0 or 5.1, then you may soon have to face problems. The company is upgrading its platform for new features and better performance. In such a situation, old devices will not be able to be a part of this change. If your phone also comes in this list, then it is very important to take backup of chats, photos and important data in time.
According to the report of WABetaInfo, a website that monitors WhatsApp updates, the company is going to end support for operating systems older than Android 6.0. This will have a direct impact on those smartphones which are still running on Android 5.0 and Android 5.1. After September 8, 2026, WhatsApp will stop opening on these devices. The company says that this change is necessary for new features, stronger security and better performance. Especially many users of India, Brazil, Pakistan, South East Asia and Africa may be affected by this decision.
Meta is continuously adding new features to WhatsApp. Recently the company is working on features like notification bubbles, due to which chats will appear as floating icons on the screen. To run such advanced features properly, modern hardware and new Android versions are required. Old smartphones are not able to support these technologies. This is why the company is now increasing the minimum system requirements. With this, the speed, security and user experience of the app will be better than before.
If you want to know whether your phone will be affected by this change or not, first open the phone's settings. Here go to the System or About phone section. After this tap on System Update or Software Information. Here the Android version of your device will appear. If your phone is running on Android 6.0 or above, then you do not need to worry. But if the version is 5.0 or 5.1, then WhatsApp will not work after September 2026.
If your phone is running on an old Android version, then the most important thing is to backup your chat history and media. For this, open WhatsApp and go to Settings. There go to the chats section and select the chat backup option. After this tap on Backup Now. Your data will be saved in Google Drive or local storage. The company is also sending these app alerts to the affected users. By taking timely backup, all your chats and files will be easily recovered after purchasing a new phone.
