Due to severe heat and heatwaves, several states across the country have declared summer holidays for schools. Let's take a look at the states where the heat is currently wreaking havoc.
Summer is currently at its peak in North India. Intense sunlight, heatwaves, and rising temperatures have heightened concerns regarding the health of children. With this in mind, several states across the country have announced summer vacations for schools. In some places, summer vacations have been declared earlier than the scheduled dates, while in others, the administration is making decisions regarding holidays based on the prevailing conditions.
Starting with Odisha, the government has taken a major decision by declaring summer holidays effective from April 27 itself. Typically, summer vacations here begin in the first week of May; however, considering the severe heat this year, the holidays have been advanced.
The heat is also steadily intensifying in Delhi. According to the academic calendar, summer holidays for schools this year will commence on May 11, 2026, and conclude on June 30, 2026. Schools are scheduled to reopen on July 1. These holidays will apply to government, aided, and most private schools.
In Rajasthan's Sikar district, school holidays have been declared in view of the heat and prevailing heatwave conditions. The administration has categorically stated that there will be no compromise regarding the health of the children. The dates for summer vacations are also being closely monitored in Jaipur and its surrounding areas.
Turning to Uttar Pradesh, preparations regarding summer vacations are currently underway in several districts in light of the prevailing heat. Based on patterns observed in previous years, summer holidays are likely to be declared starting May 20 in districts such as Noida and Ghaziabad.
In Uttarakhand, orders have been issued to close schools and Anganwadi centers in the Dehradun district due to severe heat conditions. This decision has been implemented with immediate effect. Decisions regarding holidays in other districts of the state are also being taken based on the specific conditions prevailing in those areas. In Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, orders have been issued to close schools from Nursery to Class 8. This step has been taken to protect children from the intense heat.
