Santander is closing six branches on Tuesday and seven on Wednesday as the bank continues to pivot to online services. The banking giant confirmed earlier this year that a total of 44 branches would close, with most set to shut by the end of May.

The seven locations due to close on Wednesday, April 29 are:

  • Bangor, County Down
  • Bridgwater, Somerset
  • Kirkintilloch, Lanarkshire
  • Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire
  • Newbury, Berkshire
  • Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire
  • Tonbridge, Kent

Santander announced the closures in January, saying it was responding to changes in how customers choose to bank.

The bank said 96% of all customer transactions are now carried out through digital platforms.

A spokesperson for Santander UK said: "In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers.

"We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés - as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us."

The Wednesday closures will come after six branches shut at the end of trading on Tuesday, April 28. Those are:

  • Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland
  • Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Evesham, Worcestershire
  • Mold, Clwyd
  • Ramsgate, Kent
  • Woking, Surrey

The remaining branches earmarked for closure will shut in stages before the end of May.

On May 5, the following sites will close: Bishop Auckland, County Durham; Gosport, Hampshire; Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire; Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire; Pontefract, West Yorkshire; and Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

On May 6, branches in Glengormley, County Antrim; Leyland, Lancashire; Mansfield, Nottinghamshire; Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan; Northallerton, North Yorkshire; and Ringwood, Hampshire will close.

A further group will shut on May 12, including Andover, Hampshire; Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan; Enniskillen, County Fermanagh; Macclesfield, Cheshire; and Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

On May 13, closures are planned for Cwmbran, Gwent; Golders Green, London; Heswall, Merseyside; Redditch, Worcestershire; and Stranraer, Wigtownshire.

Finally, on May 19, Newton Abbot, Devon; Stafford, Staffordshire; and Banbridge, County Down will close.

Liskeard, Cornwall and Shirley, West Midlands are due to shut on May 20.

Santander has said it will maintain a mix of full-service branches and alternative formats, alongside its digital services, as it reshapes its network across the UK.
