Donald Trump made a marriage joke to his wife Melania during the King and Queen's state visit. The US president made the quip during a speech outside the White House, with the King, Queen Camilla and Melania Trump seated behind him as he spoke.
Mr Trump presented a humourous tone throughout his speech, detailing his family's relationship with the British monarch, and that his mother "loved the Royal Family". Notioning to the first lady, he said: "They were married for 63 years and excuse me if you don't mind, that's a record we won't be able to match darling. I'm sorry, just not gonna work out that way. We'll do well, but we're not gonna do that well."
Donald Trump and the first lady have been married for 21 years, having wed in Janury 2005. They met years before in 1998.
The comments came on the second day of the King and Queen Camilla's US state visit, which marks Britain's first official monarch visit to the US since Queen Elizabeth II's trip in 2007.
The King and Queen met President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the White House yesterday for tea, after landing in the US. Later on Monday, the monarchs attended a Garden Party at the British Embassy in Washington.
During today's events outside the White House, the US President spoke about the "unique bond" between the US and the UK, and said he hoped it would "always remain that way".
"Let us go forward with even stronger resolve to carry on our sacred devotion to liberty and to the traditions of excellence that have been shared gift of all mankind," he said.
The trip came under question on Saturday night after a suspected gunman tried to storm the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington.
Reports confirmed "appropriate security" would be in place and Buckingham Palace announced on Sunday evening the visit would still go ahead.
"The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow," the Palace said in a statement.
