UIDAI has once again clarified that the Aadhaar card is valid solely as a form of identity (ID), but it cannot be considered conclusive proof of one's Date of Birth. This clarification was issued because, in many instances, Aadhaar was being utilized to substantiate a person's age.

**What is the True Purpose of Aadhaar?**
According to UIDAI, the primary function of Aadhaar is to verify an individual's identity. When utilized in conjunction with an authentication system, it establishes a person's identity; however, it is not sufficient to validate their age or date of birth.

**Limited Scope Under the Law**
UIDAI has clarified that while the Aadhaar Act, 2016, recognizes Aadhaar as a valid proof of identity, it contains no provisions designating it as proof of date of birth. In the event of any dispute regarding the date of birth recorded in an Aadhaar card, the onus of proving the correct information lies with the Aadhaar holder.

**When Are Other Documents Required?**
In situations where it becomes necessary to substantiate one's age or date of birth—such as for employment purposes, admission to schools or colleges, or to avail the benefits of government schemes—individuals are required to submit additional documents. These documents may include a Birth Certificate, Passport, or Class 10th Marksheet.

**What is Aadhaar and How Does It Work?**
Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit identification number issued to residents of India. To obtain one, basic information—such as name and address—is collected alongside biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans). Each individual is issued only one unique Aadhaar number, thereby eliminating the possibility of duplicate identities.

**A Pivotal Role in Government Schemes**
Aadhaar plays a crucial role in facilitating the direct delivery of subsidies and funds from government schemes to beneficiaries under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. Furthermore, the eKYC process enhances both the speed and transparency involved in opening bank accounts, obtaining SIM cards, and accessing various other services.
