New Lidl store in UK seaside town delayed for bizarre reason

Plans for a major new supermarket in a UK coastal town have hit a small snag - literally. A proposed Lidl store in Ramsgate is facing delays after concerns were raised about reptiles potentially living on the site. The development, earmarked for Manston Road in Ramsgate, had been due to go before planners, but a decision has now been pushed back, with councillors expected to revisit it on May 20, according to local reports.

The hold-up stems from an environmental assessment highlighting that common lizards may inhabit the land. Surveys conducted between 2014 and 2020 recorded sightings of the species at the location, prompting fresh scrutiny despite the site already having received redevelopment approval more than a year ago.

Officials from Thanet District Council were advised that further steps were needed before any green light could be given, including a mitigation plan to protect the reptiles, reported The Sun.

As part of that process, Kent County Council's biodiversity team requested a compensation strategy, with developers agreeing to set aside more than £80,000 to address environmental impacts.

The common lizard, also known as the viviparous lizard (Zootoca vivipara) is the UK's most widespread reptile.

Typically measuring between 10 and 15cm (5 or 6 inches), the species is harmless but legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it illegal to harm or disturb them.

Despite the ecological concerns, the supermarket proposal has attracted strong public backing. Nearly 300 residents supported the scheme, pointing to benefits such as new jobs, improved access for nearby housing and relief amid rising living costs.

The planned store would cover more than 23,000 sq ft and include over 120 parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, a bus stop and solar panels.

About 40 jobs are expected to be created if the development eventually gets the go-ahead.

If approved, it would become the second Lidl in the town, alongside its existing site on Margate Road.
