LPG/PNG Connection Surrender: The objective of the order issued on March 14, 2026, is to prevent the misuse of subsidies provided on cooking gas and to ensure that supplies reach eligible consumers.
Dual LPG, PNG Connections: On March 14, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum issued an order discontinuing the provision of LPG connections for households that already possess a PNG connection. In other words, households that already have access to PNG facilities will no longer be able to retain subsidized LPG connections, nor will they be able to obtain refills.
The rationale behind this move is to prevent the misuse of cooking gas subsidies—amidst mounting pressure on LPG supplies due to the crisis in West Asia—and to ensure that supplies are directed toward eligible consumers. In this regard, the government has issued clear directives to oil companies and distributors, instructing them not to issue new cylinders to customers who hold a PNG connection.
The Government Has Its Eye on You
The government is currently identifying households that hold connections for both Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG). The government took this step with the dual objective of alleviating pressure on cooking gas supplies—amidst disruptions in the global energy supply chain—and encouraging the wider adoption of PNG.
The government aims for individuals with piped gas connections to voluntarily surrender their LPG connections, thereby enabling the expansion of cylinder availability to rural areas where LPG connection facilities for cooking purposes are currently unavailable.
How Many People Have Surrendered Their LPG Connections So Far?
Meanwhile, during an inter-ministerial press briefing regarding developments in West Asia, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated, "An assessment is currently underway to determine exactly how many individuals hold dual connections."
She further noted, "To date, more than 43,000 LPG users who also possess a PNG connection have surrendered their LPG connections. This figure is relatively low." "We expect this number to be even higher."
