Flight Ticket Cost Rise: The surge in ATF prices has made international flights more expensive, thereby increasing the cost of overseas travel and directly impacting passengers' budgets.
ATF Price Hike News: If you are planning a trip abroad, this news could affect your budget. State-owned oil companies have once again hiked the price of jet fuel for international flights.
In Delhi, the price of ATF—or Aviation Turbine Fuel—has risen from ₹136,082 to ₹143,335 per kilolitre. This represents a 5.33% increase, marking the second consecutive month that prices have gone up.
Will Ticket Prices Rise?
Simply put, when jet fuel becomes more expensive, airlines recoup the cost from passengers through a fuel surcharge. This surcharge is added separately to your ticket fare. This means that whether you are traveling to Dubai, London, or Toronto, the total cost of the ticket on every route is likely to increase.
Why Has Fuel Become So Expensive?
The primary reason for this is the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Prior to this geopolitical tension, the global price of jet fuel hovered between approximately ₹8,059 and ₹8,533 per barrel; it has now surged past ₹18,488 per barrel. In just a few weeks, prices have more than doubled. Since fuel accounts for 30% to 40% of any airline's total operating costs, this increase has a direct impact on ticket prices.
Relief for Domestic Flights (For Now)
If you are traveling within the country, there is some relief for the time being. The government has exempted domestic airlines from this price hike. Even today—April 1st—when prices effectively doubled, only 25% of the total increase was applied to domestic airlines.
If you have plans for international travel, it is advisable to book your tickets as soon as possible, as prices are likely to rise even further in the coming weeks. Factor the fuel surcharge into your budget, and when purchasing tickets, be sure to check the total price—including the base fare.
