A video of alleged Magsaysay Award winning journalist Ravish Kumar is going viral on social media, in which he has reacted to the recently inaugurated ‘Ganga Expressway’ of Uttar Pradesh. In this video, while expressing his displeasure over the development works of the state government, he has raised questions on the benefits of reducing travel time through the expressway, due to which he is facing criticism.
In the video, Ravish Kumar says, “Tell me, what would you do if you reach Prayagraj five hours early? The real fun is in the journey, not in reaching. Then why is the government reducing the travel time by building expressways?” What his statement means is that the travel experience is more important than reaching the destination quickly. Social media users are making fun of him on this argument. Critics say that Ravish Kumar and his alleged leftist ideological gang have always been expressing unnecessary resentment regarding development works.
Many users also said that such criticism reflects a mindset where development projects are opposed without considering their benefits. Evaluating policies based on political differences rather than their actual outcomes is being seen as a growing trend in some quarters.
This expressway was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 29 April. This 594 km long project connects Meerut to Prayagraj and is expected to improve connectivity across Uttar Pradesh. Through this route passing through 12 districts, the travel time will reduce from about 10–12 hours to 6–8 hours, and fuel consumption is expected to reduce by about 30 percent. According to officials, the project will boost industry, transportation, agriculture and overall regional development.
