Odisha: Dahibada becomes ‘poison’… 58 people admitted to hospital in Jajpur, one lost life

At least 58 people fell ill after eating spoiled 'Dahi Vada' in Jajpur, Odisha. An elderly woman also died here. This incident happened in a village named 'Pata Pur' of Dashrathpur block. Here on Friday morning between 8.30 am and 9.30 am the villagers had eaten 'Dahi Bada' from a roadside vendor. Shortly after eating the breakfast favorite 'Dahi Bada', many people started feeling symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.

The family members immediately took him to nearby government hospitals for treatment. However, when their condition did not improve, 52 of them were shifted by ambulance to the District Headquarters Hospital in Jajpur. The affected people include both children and adults.

Health Minister reached the hospital

According to CDMO of Jajpur, there are 25 children and 27 adults. The remaining 6 people are being treated in their village itself. Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Jajpur MP Dr. Rabindra Kumar Behera reached the hospital. Here he interacted with the patients and inquired about their health. He also discussed this incident with the district administration officials. Health officials have started investigating this suspected case of food poisoning. Further information is awaited. While talking to the media, CDMO of Jajpur Dr. Bijay Kumar Mishra said that the condition of all the patients is now stable. Some people have mild fever, which will recover later.

'Vada had come to the village to sell curd'

He told that I got information from the Casualty Department as well as our field staff of Mangalpur CHC that some people of Patpur village are suffering from loose motion, stomach ache and vomiting. It has come to light that he ate some 'Dahi Bada' and some curry between 8:00 am and 11:00 am yesterday. In some people, symptoms started appearing in the evening and in others at night.

He said that a patient, Rudra Narayan Jena, said that the symptoms started appearing around 12:00 noon, when he started having vomiting and diarrhea. Rudra Narayan told that a big curd seller had come to our village. I ate a lot of curd and other people of the village also ate it. Symptoms started appearing around 12:00 noon. I and the villagers started having vomiting and diarrhoea, mild fever and dizziness. Then we were admitted here. According to doctors, this is a case of food poisoning.
