Uttar Pradesh is incorporating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and sensor-based monitoring into its expressway network, marking a shift towards data-driven infrastructure management. The initiative has been undertaken during the tenure of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with a focus on improving construction quality, safety, and long-term durability of road projects. Officials stated that the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority has collaborated with institutions including ETH Zurich and RTDT Laboratories AG to introduce sensor-based and AI-enabled systems in expressway projects. The technology has already been deployed in projects such as the Ganga Expressway.
Under the new system, road quality is monitored in real time during the construction phase, replacing earlier practices where assessments were typically conducted after project completion. Authorities said this allows immediate identification and correction of defects, potentially reducing delays and additional costs. A key component of the system is a specially equipped vehicle fitted with multiple sensors, including accelerometers, which collects data on surface uniformity, elevation changes, and vibration levels. This data is analysed through AI-based software to classify road quality into categories such as “excellent,” “good,” and “poor,” enabling more objective evaluation.
In addition to construction monitoring, AI technology is also being integrated into the operational phase of expressways. AI-enabled cameras are expected to detect traffic violations such as overspeeding and lane indiscipline, contributing to improved enforcement and road safety. Officials indicated that the initiative reflects a broader transition in infrastructure development, where emphasis is being placed not only on expanding road networks but also on integrating technology for monitoring and management. The development highlights a growing trend in India’s infrastructure sector towards the use of digital tools and real-time analytics to enhance efficiency, accountability, and safety in large-scale projects.
