Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital by ambulance before Manchester United's game against Liverpool after feeling unwell at the stadium. The former Red Devils manager is a regular at Old Trafford and had travelled to the famous ground for Sunday's crucial Premier League match. He is the most successful boss in the club's history, winning 38 major trophies during his 26-year tenure.

Ferguson was taken into medical care purely as a precaution and United officials are hopeful that he will soon be recuperating at home. He was transported to hospital around an hour before kick-off. He suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2018 from which he recovered after surgery and there is nothing to suggest this incident is related.

The legendary Scot, now 84, has faced a series of life-altering health challenges in recent years. After his brain haemorrhage, he was only given a 20 per cent chance of survival by doctors but defied those odds to make a recovery.

He later spoke about the ordeal in his film, Never Give In, saying: "There were five brain haemorrhages that day. Three died, two survived. You know you are lucky."

Ferguson also suffered immense grief after losing his wife, Cathy, back in 2023. She died at the age of 84 after 57 years of happy marriage.

Since leaving the United dugout in 2013, he has continued to attend matches on a regular basis and is often seen in the directors' box at Old Trafford.

He previously held an ambassadorial role with the club, but was later relieved of those duties by Sir Jim Ratcliffe as part of United's cost-cutting measures.

Explaining his decision, Ratcliffe said: "I sat down with Alex, just the two of us in the room.

"I said: 'Look, the club isn't where you may think it is. It is spending more than it's earning and we're going to finish up in some difficulties.

"'Honestly, we can't really afford to continue to pay you £2million a year'. I said: 'I'm going to leave it with you, let you have a think about it'.

"It was very grown up, maybe a little bit grumpy at the beginning, but he got it. He came back three days later, after talking to his son.

"He said: 'Fine, I'm going to step away from it. My decision'. I think it reflects really well on Alex because he put the club before himself."
