Today, Monday, is the result day and all preparations for counting of votes have been completed. There is a lot of stir in Maniktala seat of Kolkata district also. Initial trends are expected to emerge from here in some time.
There is a tough competition on the prestigious Maniktala seat of the district. Mamata Banerjee's party Trinamool Congress has given a chance to Shreya Pandey. Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Tapas Roy in front of him while the Left has fielded Moushumi Ghosh. Congress has presented its challenge in the form of Suman Rai Chaudhary. Voting on this seat was held in the second phase on April 29.
The contest has become exciting with Tapas Roy, who left Trinamool Congress and joined BJP, contesting from this seat. He is counted as a big leader in the politics of West Bengal. He has been a minister in Mamata Banerjee's government. Roy was elected MLA from different assembly seats in West Bengal in 2001, 2011, 2016 and 2021.
However, during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, on March 4, Tapas Roy left Trinamool Congress and resigned from the post of MLA. Two days later, on March 6, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He started his political career with Congress and remained associated with this party from 1971 to 2001. Then he joined TMC.
Maniktala assembly seat has been held by Trinamool Congress for a long time. TMC leader Sadan Pandey has been successful in winning elections from here three times in a row. He won from here for the first time in 2011.
Then in 2016 and 2021, he scored his hat-trick while maintaining the winning streak. However he died in 2024. Due to which by-election had to be held on this seat and his widow Supti Pandey was fielded and she was successful in winning the election.
