New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP victory in the West Bengal elections, calling it a vote for stability and development that comes as the world grapples with the war in West Asia and consequent economic challenges.
He appealed to the people to end the culture of violence and vendetta that prevailed in the state, and assured them that the new government will work hard to fulfil aspirations while acting against illegal immigrants. Modi emphasised that the mandate was “for badlaav (change), not badla (revenge),” and for abright future, not fear. He maintained that this election was unique as it was a peaceful exercise in which no innocents were killed.
Modi said that unlike earlier polls in the state — known for violence, fear and death of innocents — the voice of the people, not the noise of guns, was heard this time.
“Democracy, not fear, has won this time. I request all parties in Bengal that the practices prevalent earlier — where so many lives were lost — should end… Let us end this violence once and for all. Let us rise above who voted for whom, and work for Bengal,” said the PM.
The world is bearing the brunt of the West Asia crisis, while India is facing up to it with confidence, he said. This was a vote for stability, trust and development during this time of war and economic challenges, he said.
“This is a new dawn in Bengal,” Modi said. “The seats won by BJP are not just a number. This also marks the uprooting of fear, appeasement and violence. A new journey begins in Bengal… Women will be safe, youth will get employment and migration will end. The Ayushman Bharat scheme will be green-flagged in the very first cabinet meeting, and strict action will be taken against infiltrators.”
The Prime Minister also invoked Vande Mataram, Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore. “BJP will fulfil the words of Gurudev, of a place where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said.
Referring to the recent defeat of the constitutional amendment bill aimed at increasing the number of seats in Lok Sabha and the delimitation bill to facilitate implementation of women’s reservation, Modi said these election results show the anger of female voters against the Congress and other opposition parties.
“An important pillar in building a Viksit Bharat is India’s women power,” he said. “A few days ago, Congress and its allies blocked this momentum of women's power. These anti-women parties prevented the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment from being passed in Parliament. That's why I said a few days ago that parties opposing women's reservation will have to face the wrath of women. Today, sisters and daughters have punished the Congress, TMC and DMK.”
The victory in West Bengal is special for the BJP. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, precursor to the BJP, belonged to the state. Modi paid tribute to the leader and said the win was the result of years of toil and sacrifice by party workers.
Modi also thanked the voters of Assam for electing the BJP to power for a third consecutive term.
