The results of five assembly elections have come on May 4, 2026, which also includes Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. New Chief Ministers will be formed in both these states. It has not been announced who will be the Chief Minister, but amid the election atmosphere, these states are being compared on many parameters. In West Bengal, BJP has won such a big victory for the first time, while in Tamil Nadu, TVK Party has emerged as the largest party, but do you know what will be the salary of the Chief Ministers to be made in these states or how much salary do they get now?

In India, the salary of Chief Ministers is not uniform, rather it is completely decided by the state government and its assembly. Under Article 164(5) of the Constitution, the Central Government has no role in this, hence there is a huge difference in salaries in different states. In the same context, if we talk about Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, then according to the available official and compiled data, the salary of the Chief Minister of West Bengal is slightly more than that of Tamil Nadu.

Whose salary is how much?

The monthly salary of the Chief Minister of West Bengal is around Rs 2.10 lakh and the monthly salary of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is around Rs 2.05 lakh. If seen in this manner, the Chief Minister of West Bengal gets slightly more money than the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. But the thing to note is that the salary of the Chief Minister is not limited to just basic pay. It includes many types of allowances and facilities, such as government accommodation, security, staff, traveling allowance and other facilities. The structure of these allowances is different in different states, which can further increase the difference in the actual total package.

If we look at the broad picture across the country, the salary of the Chief Minister ranges from approximately Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per month. States like Telangana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are among the highest paying states, while in some smaller states it is much lower. It is clear from this comparison that both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are middle class salary paying states.
