Punjab has initiated a large-scale expansion of sports infrastructure in rural areas, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurating 250 “Pendu Khed Maidans” as part of a broader plan to develop 3,100 such grounds across the state by July 15. The rollout focuses on strengthening access to sports facilities in villages, with upgraded grounds featuring modern amenities. Officials indicated that the initiative is designed to increase participation in organized sports, particularly among younger populations in rural regions.

According to the details shared, the state’s sports budget has been significantly increased to ₹1,790 crore, compared to less than ₹200 crore in previous years. The programme includes provisions for free training, access to professional coaches, and distribution of sports equipment at each ground. These measures aim to ensure that infrastructure development is complemented by training support and structured opportunities for athletes. The facilities are expected to cater to multiple sports disciplines, with an emphasis on nurturing talent that can compete at higher levels.

The initiative also connects with upcoming sporting events and cultural revival efforts. Punjab is scheduled to host the Asian Hockey Championship trophy in October, reflecting its continued focus on hockey as a key sport. Additionally, traditional rural competitions such as the “Pind Olympics,” associated with the Kila Raipur Games, are being revived through legal changes. The broader programme highlights a combination of modern infrastructure development and efforts to sustain traditional sporting practices, while aiming to expand sports engagement across the state.
