Kushinagar is set to get a government nursing college after the state cabinet approved the transfer of land next to the district’s autonomous medical college. The project is part of a centrally sponsored scheme and is expected to expand nursing education capacity and support healthcare staffing in the region.

The proposed establishment of a government nursing college in Kushinagar has moved a step closer after the Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved the transfer of land required for the project. The decision clears a key administrative hurdle for the institution, which is planned near the Autonomous State Medical College in the district.

According to the approved proposal, 0.405 hectare of land will be transferred free of cost to the Medical Education Department for setting up the new nursing college. The land forms part of a larger 1.054-hectare ceiling land parcel located in Mauza Rampur of Padrauna tehsil. Officials said the site lies adjacent to the existing medical college campus and around 500 metres south of the Padrauna-Kubersthan main road, a location that could make the future institution more accessible to students and staff.

The nursing college in Kushinagar is among 27 such institutions allocated to Uttar Pradesh under a centrally sponsored programme aimed at strengthening nursing education infrastructure. Under the scheme, the cost of each nursing college has been estimated at Rs 10 crore. The financial structure provides for 60 percent funding from the central government, while the remaining 40 percent is to be borne by the state government.

The project is expected to expand opportunities for professional nursing education in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where access to specialised healthcare training remains limited in several districts. The presence of the new institution alongside the existing medical college could also contribute to a more integrated medical education environment by creating a local ecosystem for training nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Education and health sector observers note that the demand for trained nursing staff has grown steadily across India in recent years, driven by the expansion of hospitals, medical colleges and public health services. In that context, additional nursing institutions are increasingly seen as important for meeting future workforce requirements.

At the district level, the proposed college may also create employment during both construction and operation. Beyond direct teaching and administrative positions, ancillary services linked to campus activities may generate local economic activity.

While the cabinet’s decision marks a significant procedural step, the pace of construction, release of funds and subsequent implementation will determine how quickly the nursing college becomes functional. For Kushinagar, the approval signals the beginning of a new phase in the district’s expanding healthcare and educational infrastructure.
