New Labor Codes: Today is a day of big change for the corporate world and working people. All four new labor codes have been fully implemented across the country from today, i.e. May 9. The government has issued the official notification of the final rules related to this. The chapters of 29 different decades-old labor laws have been closed from today. Now these four new and clear labor codes have taken their place.

Maximum work only 48 hours a week

Under the new rules, the limit of working hours has now been fixed. No employee will be allowed to work for more than 48 hours in a week. This means that the arbitrariness regarding working hours in different industries will now be put to a halt. Also, it has become legally mandatory for companies to give at least one day of weekly off (holiday) in a week.

extra work, extra money

It is often seen in companies that even after the end of the shift, employees are retained and they do not get any financial benefit in return. The new labor codes have hurt this system. Now, if any employer makes you work more than the stipulated 48 hours, he will have to pay you overtime as per the rules. This means that any extra work of yours will no longer be free.

Appointment letter no longer an option

In small industries or unorganized sectors, people are hired without any education, due to which it is easy to fire them at any time. The government has closed this loophole. Now under the rules, every employer will have to give an appointment letter while hiring a worker. This will bring transparency between the worker and the company and will increase the guarantee of security in employment.

Paving the way for 'Ease of Doing Business'

It is not that these rules are only for employees. This is also a big relief for companies and industrialists. Earlier, HR and compliance teams had to do paperwork according to 29 different laws. Now they have all been reduced to just four codes. This will reduce paperwork, reduce legal complications and will give a direct boost to the 'ease of doing business' in the country.

The ball is in the states' court too

You will remember that the basic structure of these four labor codes had arrived on 21 November 2025 itself, but due to the pending of some complicated rules, it could not be fully implemented. Now the Central Government has issued a gadget notification and implemented it. However, labor is a subject in the 'Concurrent List'. This means that after the Centre, now the state governments will also have to notify these rules at their respective levels. According to officials, this process in the states may take some more time, but the new system has got the green signal from the Centre.
