  • Women neglect their own health
  • Need to focus on healthcare
  • Treatment is easier if the disease is diagnosed early

Mother’s Day: Women often prioritize the health of their family and neglect their own health. Often they go to the doctor only after the symptoms become severe. Therefore, on the occasion of this year’s Mother’s Day, there is a need to focus on women’s health awareness and preventive healthcare. Early diagnosis of serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, thyroid and heart disease makes it easier to treat them at the right time. Technical Director of BDR Pharmaceuticals Dr. Arvind Badiger has done it.

Here are five important health checks that women, regardless of age, should do regularly:

1. Breast Cancer Screening

The death rate from cancer in women is alarming. Early detection of breast cancer increases the chances of successful treatment. Women over 40 should consider getting regular mammography, while younger women should do breast self-examination once a month.

2. Cervical Cancer & HPV Tests

Cervical cancer can be prevented if diagnosed in time. However, many women avoid regular check-ups due to lack of information or reluctance. Women aged 21 to 65 years should get regular checkups as per the doctor’s advice.
These symptoms may indicate the risk of cervical cancer:
* Abnormal vaginal bleeding
* Pain in lower abdomen or pelvis
* Pain during intercourse
* Abnormal vaginal discharge
Getting the HPV vaccine can reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

3. Blood Sugar & Diabetes Testing

Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, stress and problems like PCOS are increasing the prevalence of diabetes in women. If left untreated, diabetes can affect heart, kidney, vision and reproductive health.
Women with a family history of diabetes, sudden weight changes, frequent anemia or PCOS should have their blood sugar and HbA1c checked annually.

4. Thyroid Tests

Thyroid problems are more common in women. However, its symptoms are often mistaken for stress or hormonal changes. Thyroid symptoms can include fatigue, hair loss, mood swings, weight gain, menstrual irregularities, and sleep problems.
Why is screening important?
Blood tests for TSH, T3 and T4 can detect thyroid problems before they become serious.

5. Heart Check-Up

Earlier it was believed that heart disease is more common in men. However, increasing stress, poor dietary habits, high blood pressure, diabetes and lack of physical activity are also increasing the incidence of heart disease in women.
Especially women above 35 should get regular blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and lifestyle check-ups.
These symptoms should never be ignored:
* Chest pain
* Difficulty breathing
* Very tired
* Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
* Swelling in legs
Women taking care of their own health is not an option but a necessity. This year’s Mother’s Day is the perfect time for every woman to resolve to make her health a priority.
