Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are taking on Mumbai Indians (MI) in one of the biggest clashes of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Sunday evening. With both teams fighting for crucial points in the playoff race, the high-voltage encounter has generated massive excitement among cricket fans across the country.
However, despite the fixture being officially listed as an RCB home game, the contest is not being played at Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Instead, the blockbuster clash is taking place at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, leaving many fans wondering why the venue was shifted nearly 1,200 kilometres away from Bengaluru.
The unusual venue change traces back to a special agreement signed earlier this year between the RCB management and the Chhattisgarh government.
Why are RCB playing their home games in Raipur?
Earlier this year, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai reportedly held discussions with RCB CEO Rajesh Menon and senior BCCI officials to bring top-level cricket action back to the state.
During those discussions, RCB agreed to host two IPL 2026 home matches in Raipur as part of efforts to promote cricket in the region and expand the IPL’s reach beyond traditional venues.
As a result, RCB shifted their marquee home fixtures against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders to the 65,000-capacity Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium.
Interestingly, Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium had already received partial clearance to host matches following last year’s safety review. Despite that, RCB decided to honour their commitment and proceeded with the relocation plan.
The move also marks the return of IPL cricket to Raipur after almost a decade. The venue last hosted IPL matches in 2016 and is now once again welcoming some of the league’s biggest stars and franchises.
Although the match is technically a home fixture for RCB, the unfamiliar conditions and change in venue could present a unique challenge for the Bengaluru-based side. Nevertheless, fans in Raipur are expected to turn out in huge numbers to support Virat Kohli and company.
RCB and MI clash carries massive playoff implications
RCB currently occupy a top-four spot but are coming into the contest after suffering back-to-back defeats. Another loss could significantly dent their playoff hopes and momentum heading into the final stretch of the league stage.
Meanwhile, MI are fighting to stay alive in the competition. The five-time champions know that a defeat against RCB could virtually end their chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
With explosive batting line-ups and experienced bowling attacks on both sides, fans are expecting another thrilling contest under the lights in Raipur.
