Netflix's adaptation of East of Eden boasts a stellar cast to breathe new life into this beloved classic novel.

Netflix has released the official trailer for its eagerly anticipated adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 "masterpiece" East of Eden, charting the sprawling multi-generational saga of the Trask family from the mid-19th to early 20th Century.

However, this retelling offers a fresh take on Steinbeck's iconic work, with the narrative primarily unfolding through the eyes of the "notoriously complex" Cathy Ames, portrayed by Oppenheimer star Florence Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer on the project.

While a precise release date is yet to be confirmed, Netflix has revealed the series will arrive sometime in autumn 2026.

Offering audiences a tantalising glimpse of the seven-part limited series, Pugh's voiceover as Cathy can be heard saying: "When I was a little girl, I imagined I could grow smaller, so small that the bad things couldn't find me. And I could disappear."

"Because the world is so full of evil. You are growing smaller and smaller. So small, no door can keep you out, and no door can close you in."

The trailer concludes with Pugh's character telling herself, "So small, you have almost disappeared. But you will not, Cathy. You will not disappear."

Viewers have been unable to contain their enthusiasm since the trailer dropped, with many highlighting the show's dazzling cast, including Pugh, Wolf Man's Christopher Abbott and Challengers' Mike Faist. "That cast for East of Eden already sounds ridiculously stacked", a fan posted.

Another agreed: "That's a strong cast for a classic adaptation. This version of East of Eden should bring a fresh take to Steinbeck's story while keeping its powerful themes front and centre", with someone else sharing: "Florence Pugh + this cast = instant must-watch."

A fellow user said," Florence Pugh in a psychological looking period drama? Yeah, awards season conversations already started", while someone else warned, "One of the greatest books ever. You better not s***w this up."

Adding further intrigue to Netflix's East of Eden is the revelation that the series is being helmed by actress, writer and producer Zoe Kazan.

She is the granddaughter of the legendary film director Elia Kazan, who directed the iconic 1955 big-screen adaptation of East of Eden, which marked Hollywood actor James Dean's first major role.

Reflecting on her personal connection to the project, Zoe said: "In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me.

"But it is Steinbeck's writing - personal, shocking, profound, and free - that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen."

East of Eden will debut on Netflix later this year.
