A new drama has arrived on BBC iPlayer, and it stars popular musician Loyle Carner in his debut role. Mint is a crime drama series from Charlotte Regan, first airing on BBC One. The cast includes Emma Laird, Lewis Gribben, Laura Fraser, Sam Riley, Lindsay Duncan, and Ben Coyle-Larner. The series is a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, with nods to the Shakespeare tragedy throughout.
The series synopsis reads: "Shannon, the daughter of a crime family, searches for romance and falls for Arron, a member of a rival crime family; they develop a life-changing bond as things begin to implode for Shannon's family."
Mint has an approval rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty impressive for a new series.
Rachel Aroesti of The Guardian said: "Like Romeo and Juliet meets a gangster thriller, Charlotte Regan's series is sumptuously shot with an incredible payoff - plus the most visually stunning scene of self-pleasure you will ever see."
Another said: "If you're suffering from gangster fatigue, this oblique spin on the genre might not be quite enough of a departure to win you over. Nevertheless, Regan's TV debut remains an undeniably impressive feat with an incredible payoff."
"The series is interested in family fault-lines most of all, but it eschews the usual childhood trauma, sins-of-the-father narrative for something far less predictable," added a third.
A viewer wrote: "Blew me away, character-driven drama exploring love, family and obligation. Mesmerised since the first scene and loved every second."
Another wrote: "Did not think this would be as exceptional as it was. Absolute legend of a show !!!!"
On IMDb, one user said: "The characters and whimsical way of directing scenes which are going on in Shannon's mind are utterly brilliant. Thirty-minute episodes mean you can watch the series in one sitting. Too many series have boring, predictable plots or character arcs. This is not that sort of work."
Another described it as a "brilliant watch," adding: "One of the best shows to come out of Scotland ever !!! A breath of fresh air from the BBC with such a talented director and cast. Definitely in my must-watch category. Would highly recommend."
