  • WhatsApp is testing the ‘After Reading’ message expiration feature for iOS users.
  • A message will be automatically deleted after 5 minutes, 1 hour or 12 hours after being read.
  • If the receiver does not read the message it will be auto-deleted after 24 hours.

A messaging platform owned by tech company Meta WhatsApp Currently testing a new privacy feature. It is said that this new feature will be rolled out for iPhone users. In the new feature, ‘departing’ messages will be automatically deleted after being read, instead of being deleted after a certain period of time after sending. This will maintain the privacy and security of the users. This feature was also seen earlier in the WhatsApp Android beta version. It is now planning to roll out this feature to some iPhone beta users. The user will have full flexible control over how long the message will be visible after the receiver opens the message. In this feature, unread messages will be automatically deleted after 24 hours.

iOS users will get WhatsApp’s ‘After Reading’ message expiration feature

According to information shared in a blog post by WABetaInfo, the feature is available to some users running WhatsApp beta iOS version 26.19.10.72 through Apple’s TestFlight program. Limited users using the App Store version before the big rollout may also see this option. (Photo Courtesy – Pinterest)

After reading option

According to the report, this new feature will be seen in the After Reading option under WhatsApp’s disappearing message controls. This feature gives users the option to delete a message after the receiver has read it instead of starting the countdown immediately. Users can set the timer after reading a message to five minutes, one hour or 12 hours. If the receiver does not open the message, WhatsApp will automatically delete the message after 24 hours. This new feature works in tandem with the disappearing message system already available in WhatsApp. Disappearing message system currently offers 24 hour, 7 day and 90 day timer. Users can apply this setting to individual chats or set this feature as the default for all new conversations.

It is important to note that the new timer is said to be optional and will have to be turned on manually, and unless users turn on the feature, existing chats will continue to function as before. The post also mentions that a copy of the message on the sender’s side can be deleted according to a selected timer, while the countdown will start for the receiver only after the message has been read. WhatsApp has not yet announced when the feature will be available to all users, but it is expected to roll out to more beta testers in the coming weeks.
