Kundapura: The habit of reading and writing has been declining significantly in recent days due to the influence of mobile phones and new media. Today, reading stories, novels, and books is no longer mandatory in schools, as it used to be in the past.

Reading books is an integral part of education. Stories, poems, and literature are essential for imagination to take flight in young minds, said Dr. Sandhya S. Pai, Managing Editor of Taranga weekly.

She was speaking after inaugurating the two-day "Akshara Ambari" children's festival on Saturday.

The event was organized by 'Udayavani' daily newspaper at the Sri Siddhivinayak Residential School in Hattiyangadi to foster reading, writing, and creative interest among rural students. It was held in collaboration with the school and sponsored by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA).

Mobile phones and new apps have taken the place of books today. New media platforms are not inherently bad, but they should be used in moderation. They offer opportunities to access any information within seconds.

Do not completely abandon mobile phones, but use them only for what is necessary for life. Utilize these media platforms to acquire knowledge, but let there be a limit to everything.

Parents must maintain open communication with their children. You should be fully aware of what your child is watching and doing, she advised.
