Piyush Chawla, a former Indian cricketer, expressed concerns regarding the Gujarat Titans (GT) following their recent defeat. He noted that the team is eager to secure a top-two finish, especially with one match remaining. Chawla emphasized that a loss could complicate their playoff chances due to net run rate and other match outcomes.
Currently, the Titans are positioned in the top two, but with several teams, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Delhi Capitals (DC), still competing for playoff spots, their position is not guaranteed. Chawla stated on Star Sports 'Cricket Live', "Gujarat Titans will be anxious as they aim for a top-two finish. They have a crucial game against CSK ahead. Winning that match will ensure their place, but a loss could bring net run rate into play. It's vital to control what you can at this stage of the tournament."
Chawla also commended Sunil Narine's impressive bowling figures of 2/29 while defending a total of 248 runs, labeling him as "one of the best in the business" due to his exceptional economy rate.
"Cricket has changed significantly, with runs being scored freely. However, Narine's economy rate remains a constant. Despite the high-scoring nature of the match, his performance was pivotal. He bowled crucial overs and maintained pressure, taking two wickets," Chawla remarked. He highlighted Narine's strategic dismissal of GT captain Shubman Gill, noting, "When Gill was looking strong, Narine adjusted his angle, which was a rare move for him against a right-hander. This tactical shift was key to his success."
Chawla pointed out that while Shubman Gill is a dependable batsman, chasing a target of 248 runs presents a unique challenge. He explained, "For a team like GT, accustomed to chasing totals around 200 to 210, this was a significant hurdle. They excel in that range, but targets exceeding 240 are tough for their batting approach. Gill and Sai Sudharsan typically build partnerships, lacking the explosive firepower needed in the top order."
In the match, GT chose to bowl first, and KKR capitalized on this decision. After an early wicket of skipper Rahane (14), Finn Allen (93 off 35 balls, including four boundaries and ten sixes) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi formed a formidable 95-run partnership. Following Allen's exit, Raghuvanshi reached his fifth fifty of the season, contributing to a 108-run partnership with Cameron Green (52* off 28 balls, with three fours and four sixes), leading KKR to a total of 247/2 in 20 overs. Raghuvanshi finished with an unbeaten 82* off 44 balls, hitting four boundaries and seven sixes. Mohammed Siraj and Sai Kishore each took a wicket.
During GT's chase, Sai Sudharsan had to retire hurt early. However, Shubman Gill (85 off 49 balls, with five fours and seven sixes) and Jos Buttler (57 off 35 balls, with five fours and two sixes) formed a 128-run partnership, keeping GT in contention. Unfortunately, after their dismissals, GT struggled to maintain the required run rate, concluding at 218/4 in 20 overs. Sunil Narine was the standout bowler for KKR with figures of 2/29 and earned the 'Player of the Match' title.
Currently, GT holds second place with eight wins and five losses, totaling 16 points, while KKR sits at seventh with five wins, six losses, and one no result, accumulating 11 points.
