According to reports, she claimed that Schmidt had assaulted her on a yacht in 2021 and initiated non-consensual acts at the Burning Man festival in 2023. Additionally, she alleged that he had used a backdoor in Google's systems to monitor her devices. Schmidt has denied these accusations.

In response to these allegations, various feminist and leftist student organizations distributed flyers during the commencement, encouraging attendees to express their disapproval by turning their backs and booing loudly when Schmidt spoke. The lawsuit was sent to arbitration earlier this year, following a ruling that a financial settlement and arbitration agreement between Schmidt and Ritter took precedence over a federal law aimed at preventing forced arbitration in cases of sexual misconduct.

As Schmidt began his speech, he was quickly met with boos, which intensified when he addressed the topic of artificial intelligence—a subject that resonated deeply with graduates concerned about their future job prospects in an increasingly automated world. He acknowledged the fears of the graduates, stating, "I know what many of you are feeling about that. I can hear you. There is a fear." He recognized that many felt they were inheriting a world fraught with challenges, including job loss and climate change.

Schmidt's response to these concerns was to encourage adaptability, asserting that while AI will undoubtedly shape the future, it is crucial for the graduates to influence its development. He reflected on his tenure at Google, admitting that the same technologies that connect people can also lead to isolation, a sentiment that did little to ease the tension in the room.
