BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has appealed to the Mumbai Mayor and the police administration to stop open sacrifice of goats in residential areas during Bakrid celebrated later this month. Kirit Somaiya, in a post on social media platform
Kirit Somaiya has written a letter to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde demanding strict adherence to the existing rules to animal slaughter in the city. In his letter, he alleged that despite restrictions imposed by the courts and the municipal corporation, some people illegally sacrifice goats in the open on Bakrid and other occasions.
In the letter, he wrote, “In the name of Bakrid and other occasions, some anti-social elements use Muslim religion to illegally sacrifice goats in the open.” He said that the Municipal Corporation and the courts have made clear rules on this subject, but they are repeatedly violated.
Somaiya demanded that BMC issue strict instructions to all ward offices and concerned officials in this regard. He said that as per the applicable slaughter laws, religious animal sacrifice cannot be allowed in any residential area of Mumbai. He urged the Mayor to issue new instructions for strict compliance with the laws to sacrifice before Bakrid.
This demand has been made at a time when Eid Al Adha of the year 2026 is likely to be celebrated on May 27, based on the sighting of the moon.
Earlier this month, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had informed about preparations to provide extensive facilities at Deonar slaughter house in view of Bakrid. According to Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr Ashwini Joshi, these arrangements include CCTV surveillance, deployment of security personnel, parking facilities, food courts, health services, solid waste management and grievance redressal system.
A market for buffaloes and goats is being organized at Deonar slaughter house from May 17 to May 30, 2026.
Dr. Joshi said that the Market Department of BMC has given permission for religious animal slaughter at 109 places in Mumbai between May 28 and 30. He said that under this arrangement, 24×7 control rooms, QR-code based animal verification system, temporary shelter centres, veterinary facilities and more than 500 police personnel will be deployed.
