Petrol pump fraud is a common issue, with numerous complaints about short-filling and fuel adulteration. These deceptive practices often involve the use of electronic devices or other tricks to cheat customers.

Common Complaints

Many customers report that they do not receive the full amount of fuel for the money they pay. Additionally, fuel adulteration is a frequent concern. To avoid being scammed, it is essential to stay alert. Employees at petrol stations may engage in malpractice, distracting customers or using other deceptive tactics.

Methods of Tampering

Electronic Chip Manipulation: Reports indicate that some pump staff install electronic chips in dispensing machines. These chips, controlled remotely, ensure that the meter shows a correct reading while dispensing less fuel than indicated. As a result, customers pay for more fuel than they actually receive.

The ‘Zero’ Scam: This is one of the simplest and most common frauds. Employees dispense fuel without resetting the meter to zero, adding the previous customer's reading to your bill, leading to overcharging.

The ‘Jump’ Trick: This prevalent method involves the meter reading jumping abruptly. Instead of incrementing sequentially, the display may jump from lower to higher figures, resulting in less fuel being dispensed while the full payment is collected. A customer could lose up to ₹100 when purchasing 10 liters of fuel.

Tips to Avoid Fraud

1. Step out of your vehicle while refueling and closely monitor the machine's readings.

2. If the attendant tries to distract you, remain vigilant about their actions.

3. If you notice a sudden jump in the meter reading, check the fuel quantity using the standard measuring gauge available at the station.

4. If you suspect fuel adulteration, request a filter paper test; adulterated fuel will stain the paper.

5. If you notice any discrepancies or suspect adulteration, report it through the company's helpline, mobile app, or website.
