Julian Nagelsmann has chosen not to comment on the international future of Manuel Neuer ahead of Germany’s World Cup squad announcement. Despite the Bayern Munich captain’s earlier retirement from international duty, reports indicate that the veteran goalkeeper could make a remarkable return to reclaim the number one position for the tournament in North America.
The uncertainty surrounding Neuer continues to attract attention. Nagelsmann was expected to shed light on his selections for the 2026 World Cup during his appearance on ZDF-Sportstudio. However, as the official 26-man squad reveal has been postponed to May 21, speculation has intensified over Neuer’s potential comeback at the age of 40.
In previous statements, Nagelsmann has been clear, noting: “Neuer retired of his own free will, and he has reiterated that multiple times, so there’s no point in continually discussing it.” Nonetheless, his recent reluctance to explicitly rule out the goalkeeper’s return has only heightened rumours that Neuer could once again be Germany’s first-choice shot-stopper, possibly ahead of Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann.
When asked directly about Neuer’s inclusion, Nagelsmann declined to provide details. “The list won’t be published, so I won’t comment on it,” he said. “What I can confirm is that there are many players on it since it includes 55 names. As I mentioned earlier, there have been 62 phone calls, so seven are still pending.”
He continued: “It’s our responsibility to consider and assess every eligible player with a German passport who is fit to play. The list also includes some players who haven’t featured during my time in charge but have had solid seasons in the Bundesliga, Premier League, or other competitions.”
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany has also voiced his belief in Neuer’s enduring class, reinforcing the debate about the goalkeeper’s place in the national team. Kompany was firm in his praise, stating, “We have the best German goalkeeper in Neuer.” However, the Belgian tactician was cautious to clarify that his remarks should not be seen as an attempt to influence Nagelsmann’s decision-making, adding that he wanted to allow the national coach to “prepare his team without any external pressure.”
Beyond the goalkeeping dilemma, Nagelsmann faces several other selection challenges before the final deadline. Reports suggest he is considering injecting youth into the squad, with teenagers Lennart Karl and Said El Mala being discussed as possible surprise inclusions in the 26-man team heading to the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Fitness concerns also remain for Felix Nmecha after an extended injury absence, while questions persist about whether popular striker Niclas Fullkrug has done enough to earn his place. Nagelsmann is expected to use the upcoming Eintracht Frankfurt versus Stuttgart game as a last opportunity to assess players before finalising his squad with his coaching staff.
