Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has firmly stated that Luke Shaw has earned his place in Thomas Tuchel’s final England squad for the 2026 World Cup. After battling back from serious injury setbacks, the dependable left-back has shown remarkable form, starting every single Premier League fixture this season and highlighting his indispensable role for the Red Devils.

Shaw’s stellar stats and club contributions

Carrick believes Shaw should be included when Tuchel announces his 26-man England selection on Friday. The defender has not represented his country since the 2024 European Championship final but holds an impressive international record with three goals and nine assists from 34 caps. This season, he has been one of United’s most reliable performers, being the only player to have started all 37 Premier League games, amassing 3,151 minutes of action. His outstanding run was capped off by a fine goal in United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. In total, Shaw has recorded five goals and 30 assists across 324 appearances for the club.

Carrick praises the ‘fantastic’ defender eyeing World Cup selection

Following the weekend victory, Carrick elaborated on why Shaw’s all-round qualities make him a perfect fit for the upcoming World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. When questioned about Shaw’s national team prospects, Carrick did not hesitate to endorse him. “I certainly think so, yeah,” he said. “I don’t have much influence over the decision, but I definitely think he deserves it. The consistency, the level he plays at, his experience, strengths, and natural attributes — for me, he’s a fantastic full-back.”

Resilience and fitness: Shaw’s complete turnaround

Staying fully fit through a long season is no small achievement, particularly considering Shaw’s history of injuries. Carrick was quick to praise the defender’s durability and professionalism, acknowledging the demanding nature of the modern game. On Shaw’s ability to remain available throughout, Carrick remarked: “It’s tough for anyone to do that, to be honest. With so many matches, it’s rarely easy, and sometimes injuries are unavoidable. They’re just part of football. So, to start every single game this season is really fantastic.”

England’s upcoming fixtures

Looking ahead to the summer, England are set to play friendly matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica before beginning their World Cup Group L campaign. Carrick believes Shaw’s extensive experience will be crucial as the Three Lions prepare to face Croatia on June 17, followed by decisive encounters with Ghana and Panama.
