Till now, liquorice was known only to cure cough, but sweet in taste, liquorice is rich in the properties of calcium, glyceric acid, anti-oxidant, antibiotic, protein and fat. It has been used for centuries for the treatment of eye diseases, mouth diseases, throat diseases, asthma, heart diseases and wounds. This works as a panacea in the treatment of many diseases by pacifying the three doshas – phlegm and bile.

Eye diseases are cured by washing eyes with liquorice decoction. Mixing equal amount of fennel powder with liquorice powder and eating one spoon in the evening helps in reducing eye irritation and also improves eyesight. Grinding liquorice in water, soaking a cotton swab in it and tying it on the eyes helps in removing redness around the eyes.
Liquorice is also beneficial in ear and nose diseases. Pouring milk cooked with liquorice and dry grapes into the ears provides relief in ear diseases. Mixing 3-3 grams of liquorice and shundi with six small cardamoms and 25 grams of sugar candy, making a decoction and putting 1-2 drops in the nose provides relief from nasal diseases.
- During the problem of mouth ulcers, applying honey on a piece of licorice and sucking it is beneficial. Sucking liquorice also cures cough and throat diseases. To produce phlegm in dry cough, 1 teaspoon of it should be licked with honey 3 times a day. Drinking 20-25 ml of its decoction in the evening clears the respiratory tract. Sucking liquorice relieves hiccups.
Liquorice is also beneficial in heart disease. Mixing 3-5 grams of Kutki powder and consuming 15-20 grams of sugar candy with water regularly every day is beneficial in heart diseases. Its consumption also provides relief from stomach diseases.
It is also beneficial for skin diseases. By applying liquorice paste on pimples, they get cured quickly. Grinding liquorice and sesame and mixing it with ghee and applying it on the wound helps in healing the wound.
